Emergency School Closing Information

Families of South Putnam Community Schools:

In cases of emergency or adverse weather, you may be affected by school closings, school delays or early dismissals. Please make sure your contact information and alert numbers are updated in Harmony. School Messenger is updated daily with your most current information. You will be receiving a phone call, text message, and or e-mail alert depending on settings within your account.  If you have any questions in regards to School Messenger, please contact Hilarie Pistelli at hpistelli@sputnam.k12.in.us or at 765.653.3148. In addition, when weather conditions are threatening, have your radio or TV on the channels listed below. Families should be making arrangements now for childcare and transportation needs. If at all possible, the decision regarding school closings or delays will be made by 6:30 a.m. and announced to the media listed below:

WIBC, Radio, Indianapolis: 93.1 on your FM dial

When weather conditions are already severe the evening before, announcements of school delays or closings could be made in the evening prior to the following morning. Please listen to the stations above for any possible announcements of school closings or delays.

One of the following plans is possible, during inclement weather:

1. CLOSE school entirely: all media notified by 6:30 A.M.
2. DELAY the start of school for two hours.
A. Buses will run two hours late.
B. Breakfast will NOT be served.
C. No a.m. Area 30 Vocational School when on a two-hour delay
3. DELAY the start of school for one hour:
A. Buses will run one hour late.
B. Breakfast will not be served.
4. DELAY the start of school, but HOLDING, for possible close of the school for the entire day. This might be when the weather conditions causing a delay worsen. A decision to close would be given to the above media during the delay period.
5. EARLY RELEASE: weather conditions have changed to the point that, without an early dismissal, vehicle travel will be unsafe. Unless conditions dictate otherwise, the students will be released two hours prior to the regular end of the school day. The media will be notified on the times of early release.

When conditions warrant, the superintendent will be on the roads between 4:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., so he is not available at home or work.  Please do not call him directly.  You may gather information through the sources above and/or you will be notified through Schoolmessenger.

These plans may be altered should the situation warrant a change.
